France’s National Flower
The iris has always been one of my favorite flowers to grow in my gardens partly because it is indestructbile and pretty much guaranteed to bloom despite the fickleness of many a Spring. It’s no wonder then that living in France where the national flower is the Iris is fitting!
The fleur-de-lis or fleur-de-lys has been part of French history for centuries, having been evident in early artwork, royal standards, architecture and kings of France. The royalty long use the emblem of the iris to represent their sovereignty. It has also been associated with the regligious symbol of 3 or the ‘trinity’. Granted the emblem and flower of France is a more stylized version of the iris we grow in our gardens but it has a very long history with France and French gardeners who were some of the earlier growers, creating the rainbow of new colors we benefit from!
