Choosing Your Wedding Color Palette

My wedding colors were pink and green and I’ve never strayed from this color combination in any color choices I’ve made over the years. I love them together.

Wedding colors set the mood and paint a cohesive picture of your day. Even if you are having an intimate, casual wedding or an elopement just for the two of you, a wedding color scheme is key to creating a cohesive wedding aesthetic. The colors you choose are also an expression of you. Selecting based on current trends will date your wedding photos. Think of the overall concept and avoid fads.

Once you have selected the ambiance and color scheme, it is easy to select the invitations down to the napkins. So, besides getting engaged, it is one of the first things to cross off your planning list.

Choose 3 colors that best give the impression and concept of your wedding. Black white and gray?Blue, Purple and Mauve? Too many colors will make your wedding look like a circus and less than 3 could be a little boring unless you’re going for monochromatic.

As an artist and a florist, color is one of the first things I’ll ask you about. Some brides are right on the money for their choice and have planned already and others are in the wishy washy zone where they’re in “nudes and white” but “not sure” which is okay too as we explore together options.

The first thing every couple must do is find their venue. It will dictate everything after it. When I had a venue that was plants and greenhouse and garden like, greens for me were perfect. So take in the overall look of the venue and its colors and then consider your selection of a palette.

Seasons will also be a major consideration for your wedding colors. Red roses in summer may not have the same appeal as bright red roses in a winter setting. What drama! Flowers also vary in the season along with weather. Your desire for hydrangeas will not hold up at a July or August wedding!

Dramatic? How about complimentary colors like blue and yellow or gold.  Light and Airy? Pastels and muted pastels.  Rich and Old World? How about deep jewel tones?

Consider the time of day for your wedding. Darker colors for an evening wedding will be lost in the candlelight. Bright sunshine with all white will give your photographer a headache!

I bet you didn’t realize the factors that you should consider when selecting your wedding colors. It isn’t as complicated as it sounds. I am a big believer in instinct when it comes to putting colors and an ambiance together. You know it is right when you feel right about it. And if still having trouble, talk with your florist. As artists we work with color combinations regularly creating harmony, a mood or feeling with the flowers. She can be of great assistance when selecting the right colors in the type of flowers also.

But most of all, have fun with this! Embrace color and use it to celebrate your special day enveloping all your loved ones who have come to share it with you!
