10 Steps to Plan Your Wedding in France

1. Determine your budget and decide on the type of wedding you want in France. A chateau in the countryside gives a different ambiance than perhaps a grand hotel in Paris.

2. Research and select a wedding planner who specializes in French weddings. As an English speaking wedding florist, I offer more than just flower arrangements. It is a priority to me that when you live 4000 miles away from your wedding venue that you have someone there that can offer you assurances and speak in French.

3. Choose a date and location for your wedding in France. Start early as summer destination weddings fill fast. Less popular months but just as beautiful-earlier spring months and later autumn. The budget would appreciate this time of year.

4. Start gathering the necessary legal documents for getting married in France. Not everyone can legally marry in France. You have to be French, marrying a French person or live here for a good amount of time during the year.

5. Decide on the type of ceremony you want, whether it's a civil ceremony or a religious one. You can have a family member officiant, or contact the local village church chaplain to see their requirements for a church wedding. French church weddings are pretty serious.

6. Select and book your wedding venue in France, taking into consideration the number of guests and your preferred style. Can the guests stay on site at the chateau you’ve chosen? Are there plenty of activities and transport so your guests enjoy the travel experience? Gift bags with snacks, drinks and souvenirs also make a wonderful first impression. Include maps and a list of activities too.

7. Hire a caterer and decide on the menu for your wedding reception. Not all venues come with a ready to cook caterer. Research options and check with your other vendors if they can recommend someone.

8. Arrange transportation and accommodations for you and your guests in France. This is very important. Having guests of all ages, not everyone can figure out how to navigate a foreign country.

9. Choose a photographer and videographer to capture the memories of your special day. Ask me! I’ve compiled a list of my favorites to share.

10. Plan the details of your wedding, including the decorations, flowers, music, and any additional entertainment you desire. A wedding designer such as me can offer you overall suggestions for the ambiance with table decor, flowers, party favors etc.
