Sustainability; Drying Wedding Flowers

It is so sad to toss out the flowers from a wedding as a florist. You babied them upon their arrival and now they go right on top of the compost heap. Some of them in perfect condition too! Destination wedding guests don’t have the luxury of taking wedding flower arrangements home with them so when I clean up after the wedding, I’m left with a lot of flowers. And it seems so wasteful. What to do?

The answer has come to me by way of reusing these flowers in their dried state. I take them back with me and hang them up to dry and will use them in wreaths or dried bouquets, confetti or pressed keepsakes. It keeps the sustainability in floristry that much stronger. I have started offering brides the opportunity to dry their wedding bouquets and create a decorative piece that features all their flowers. It is something that, when properly protected or stored, will last a long time. It keeps the memories of your wedding day with you in blooms!

Here are some examples of dried flowers from wedding bouquets;

The other major things that don’t go to waste are all the rubberbands! All those bouquets are wrapped with an elastic and I collect them and use them to hang the newly acquired, now used, flowers. This art not only has so much potential but makes for a little less impact on the floristry environment.
